If you like deserts, Namib is the mother of all deserts and you have to visit

Within the Namib Desert in Namibia, there is the Sossusvlei area, which belongs to the wider region of southern Namibia and extends between the Koichab and Kuiseb rivers. This area is characterized by high sand dunes of intense pink and orange colors, as a result of the high percentage of iron in the sand and the consequent oxidation processes. You can recognize the oldest dunes as they are of a more intense reddish color.

These dunes are among the highest in the world, and many of them have a height of more than 200 meters, the highest, with about 380 meters high, has the nickname of Big Daddy. This is the one we will climb.

DEPARTURE PLACESossusvlei

The fauna in the Sossusvlei area is quite rich. It mostly consists of small animals that can survive with little water, including a number of arthropods, small reptiles and small mammals such as rodents or jackals, larger animals such as antelopes (mainly oryxes and gazelles) and ostriches. Most of the fauna in the Sossusvlei Namib is endemic and very adapted to the specific characteristics of the Namib. In particular, fog-basking beetles, such as the Namib Desert Darkling Beetle, have developed a technique for collecting water from early morning mists through stances on their backs.

Departure Day

First, they will take us to the airport and we will take the plane and land at the Sossusvlei airfield. A driver with a 4×4 will be waiting to take us to the chosen lodge, south of Sesriem. The surroundings and the proximity to the desert dunes, literally, just a few steps away, make a good lodge in the desert an ideal destination. Arrival and check-in at the lodge. At dusk we will meet with one of the guides of the lodge to take a 4×4 tour around the private reserve along with other lodge guests.

Day 2

Breakfast at the lodge. Today very early in the morning, we will have the opportunity to perform an unforgettable and beautiful activity: fly over the entire Sossusvlei desert in a balloon . Let yourself go in this magical landscape enjoying an unforgettable experience. After the landing, a copious breakfast with South African champagne will await us. After enjoying breakfast we will be transferred back to the lodge. We will have the afternoon free to rest and take a bath in the hotel pool. When it is time for the sunset, we will be taken to observe it from a magical point. ¡Once there we will toast to celebrate live!.

Day 3

We will start early from the lodge to enter Namib-Naukluft Park at dawn, while the temperature is still mild and the dunes are in their best color contrast. Very early we will pass by the dunes to the Tsaucha River. The world famous Sossusvlei is a huge marsh of petrified mud, surrounded by the famous red dunes that contrast with the blue sky. These dunes have evolved over millions of years, and the wind continues to transform the contours of this sea of red sand continuously. We will stop at some of the highest dunes in the area, including the famous Dune 45 Viewpoint and the most daring of us can climb to the top to enjoy the incredible landscape. After a quiet ride, our 4×4 will take us through the dunes, where driving is a total adventure. We will come to a point where the 4×4 can no longer continue. Here is where the new adventure starts. Loaded with water and a light backpack we will begin our ascent of the Big Daddy, the highest dune in the region. We will start our climb up the crest at a brisk pace, we recommend that the guide goes first as the most difficult and tiring thing is to create the first path in the arena, but every effort has its reward. Once we reach the summit, the views are amazing. After resting on top of the dune, we will begin the journey downwards. The hours of rise become minutes when we go downwards. You can run, without fear, it’s like running on cotton. There is no risk of being injured. Once down the great dune we can jump directly into the Dead Vlei lake, if we are lucky and the lake is full of water. Than we can enjoy a wonderful turquoise lagoon. The lagoon is a white clay pot that is located near the most famous Sossusvlei salt mine, inside Namib-Naukluft Park in Namibia and the contrast of colors has made it famous throughout the world. There, in the middle of the dry lake you can see petrified black acacias due to the lack of humidity. When you get back to the 4×4, you will enjoy a well-deserved picnic for breakfast at the foot of the dunes that you have conquered before. Return to the lodge at noon. After lunch, you will have time to rest. In the afternoon you will meet with a guide to take a 4×4 tour around the surroundings. Dinner will be served at the lodge.

Disfruta de la subida y la bajada al Big Daddy

Sossusvlei is one of the emblematic landscapes that make Namibia worth a visit. In this place time stands still to enter the heart of the Namib desert. Huge dunes of pink and red colors mixed with mountains of granite embedded in yellow and black tones alongside the whitish tones of the dry areas covered by dead trees make the colourful kingdom of the oryx antelope… Sossusvlei is not just one of the oldest deserts on the planet but an unbeatable destination for a balloon trip and dune climbing.
